CCVR Research Day 2024- Gunner Lectureship
The CCVR Research Day offers an excellent opportunity to explore and discuss cutting-edge cardiovascular science with students, fellows, and faculty. Topics span Heart Failure, Cardio-regenerative Medicine, Ion Channels and Arrhythmias, Vascular Biology, Cardiac Metabolism, Muscle Mechanics, Resuscitation, Risk Assessment, Excitation-Contraction Coupling, and Pulmonary Hypertension.
The Herman P. Gunnar Lecture celebrates innovation in cardiovascular science by featuring leading basic and clinical researchers. Dr. Herman Gunnar (1890–1972), former Chief of Cardiology at UIC, was a pioneering Chicago cardiologist committed to accessible, comprehensive care.
This lecture honors Dr. Herman P. Gunnar’s dedication to scholarly, accessible medical care. Born in Sweden in 1890, he earned his medical degree from Northwestern and trained in Europe before returning to Chicago to practice. His commitment to affordable, comprehensive care inspired his sons—Peter, a judge, and Rolf, a cardiologist who later became Director of Medicine at the University of Illinois.
Dr. William Gunnar is a surgeon in Hines, Illinois and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. He is the VA’s National Director for the Center for Public Safety.
