Dr. Richard Minshall is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The focus of his research program is to understand how structural and scaffolding functions of caveolin-1 regulate formation and trafficking dynamics of caveolae, cell-cell communication, PMN adhesion and transmigration, and cell proliferation and differentiation during mechanotransduction, inflammatory injury, and repair/remodeling of tissues. These efforts are leading to new discoveries and mechanistic insights into basic endothelial cell functions as well as the pathophysiology of vascular injury associated with chronic wound healing, atherosclerosis, neuropathology, and thrombosis. Dr. Minshall has published more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters, and has a 15-year history of continuous NIH funding. An important aspect of this active research program is to engage students, postdocs, and residents in the identification of basic mechanisms of vascular inflammation, inflammatory hyperpermeability, and pathological angiogenesis that can be translated into therapeutic strategies. As a lab, they have expertise in cell signaling using immunological and imaging methods used to assess molecular mechanisms in expression model systems, primary cultures, and intact tissues. His role in these studies is to maintain a vibrant and rigorous research environment, mentor trainees, and ensure that all have the opportunity to grow, succeed, and make the next big breakthrough.
